The decision was made last night: From 23 July 2011, gays and lesbians will also be able to marry in New York
On Friday night, the New York City Senate voted 33 to 29 in favour of opening up marriage to gays and lesbians in the Big Apple, including all the legal benefits that entails. The highest politician in the city state, Governor Andrew Cuomo, has already signed the law so that it can come into force in 30 days. The decision was preceded by days of public mud-slinging between opponents and supporters of the bill. In the end, some Republican senators also voted in favour of the law. The people of New York are overwhelmingly in favour of opening up marriage. Meanwhile, the Empire State Building shines in the colours of the rainbow to celebrate the day. Congratulations!
