When the book "My life with HIV" was published in 2008, a load was lifted from Uwe Görke's mind. His autobiography, which provides an insight into the past 15 years of his life, had taken a lot of work. His efforts are now being rewarded. At the beginning of June, the HIV activist from Schwert will receive the "Health Media Award". This competition, which was held for the third time in 2010, honours "outstanding achievements in the field of health communication". Three prizes are awarded in each of the different categories.
They will be presented as part of the "4th Health Trend Forum". A congress focussing on the economic aspects of the health sector. Companies, marketing experts, doctors and journalists discuss topics such as "The celebrity media patient: balancing act between suicide, viewing figures, responsibility and education", "The future of medical series", "Patient hotels" and "Health and SMEs".
The framework for the award is clearly defined. The award recognises outstanding achievements in the field of "health communication", i.e. media publications or campaigns that "break new ground in an exemplary manner, stand for transparency and high ethical standards and are economically successful at the same time". Or which have provided "significant food for thought".
Second place, which Uwe Görke claims to have won in the "AIDS prevention/celebrities" category, is probably more about food for thought. Apart from this laudable decision, however, the jury is unimpressed by critical voices. In the special category "Publicity/Education", the Michael Stich Foundation received an award for its HIV poster campaigns. These campaigns were organised by Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe and self-help activists. has been heavily criticisedbecause they are designed for shock effect, equate HIV with AIDS and death and are likely to fuel feelings of guilt.
Fortunately, Uwe Görke is cut from a different cloth and is delighted with the award: "I am proud that my work is now being recognised and acknowledged beyond the borders of Schwerte. It has brought me a great deal closer to my goal of sensitising as many people as possible to the topic of HIV/AIDS."
