EMIS provides new figures on gay sex in Europe. Protective behaviour in Germany is stable and performs very well in comparison. The bad news: checks for sexually transmitted infections are completely inadequate. Blowjobs very popular!
You have to imagine a gay man's sex life like this: Getting to know a partner over the internet, then definitely giving head, usually also mutual wanking, often anal intercourse - including protection against HIV. All this with two to ten men a year.
Before protests arise: It's all just statistics. In real life, of course, everyone does it their own way. But it's interesting to see what comes out when you ask more than 180,000 gay and bisexual men across Europe how they do it.
This is exactly what the team of the European Internet Survey EMIS did last year. In Germany, more than 53,000 men took part! The second community report has now been published with the results - and with many thanks and lots of information for those who made the study possible through their participation: The community, its media and above all Gay Romeo.
Here are the most exciting Sex and protection facts:
Blowjobs are the most popular sex practice - even before mutual wanking!
83% per cent of respondents in Germany have had anal sex in the last 12 months. However, the figures are higher in Spain, Portugal, Belarus and Russia, "Front runner" is surprisingly Moldova: 94%! Swedes, Finns and Estonians were conspicuously reluctant to have anal sex (all 78%).
Three quarters of the men surveyed in Germany reported that in the 12 months prior to the survey they had no sex with a risk of HIV transmission (defined here as unprotected anal intercourse with a partner whose HIV status they did not know or who had a different test result from their own). 25% reported at least one such Risk in the last 12 months.
Safer sex behaviour therefore appears to remain stable! (In the earlier studies by sociologist Michael Bochow, who is also involved in EMIS, around 20% of respondents always reported occasional risk contacts and 10% more frequent risk contacts).
And Germany is doing very well with these figures. Only Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg and Slovenia scored better. Turkey had the most risky sex: 49% of respondents reported such contacts.
IWWIT Campaign Manager Matthias Kuske comments: "EMIS shows once again that, fortunately No 'increasing carelessness' exists. The vast majority consistently favour safer sex. That is remarkable and deserves respect! Talk of carelessness, on the other hand, is dangerous because many people tend to adapt their behaviour to trends - so it could become a self-fulfilling prophecy."
But let's talk a bit more about sex: Most respondents (Europe-wide) have Two to ten sex partners per yearwhom they mainly meet on the internet. In Germany, 47% had between two and ten sex partners in the year prior to the survey, 23% had more than ten. 41% were in a relationship with a man.
The more partners, the more important regular Checks for sexually transmitted infections (sexually transmitted infections, STI). Thanks to EMIS, we now know that such examinations take place in Germany. take place far too rarely and are often completely inadequate. It's hard to believe: 28% of German respondents underwent a check, but only around one in five of those examined also had their penis and anus examined. In an examination for sexually transmitted pathogens in gay men!
The other checks only involved blood tests. This can be used to detect syphilis, for example. However, in order to detect puss, anal gonorrhoea or chlamydia, you have to take a closer look and, if necessary, take an anal swab. Such infections often go undetected due to inadequate examinations. This is also fatal because sexually transmitted infections the Risk of HIV transmission can increase.
Conclusion: If you are one of the many men who have sex with changing partners, you should Have it checked regularlywhether everything is okay, even if he has no complaints. And by a competent doctor who knows what gay men do in Germany and has no problem with it. Anyone who has been at risk of HIV should be tested. This is the only way to start treatment in good time if necessary.
Otherwise applies: Keep up the good work! Or in a different way - just as you like it.
