The health insurance fund covers the costs of PrEP for people with an increased risk of contracting HIV. This includes gay men*, for example. If you have had or will have sex without a condom in the past or in the future, this can be a justification for PrEP.
The costs of the tablets are paid as well as all necessary accompanying examinations.
Only authorised doctors are allowed to prescribe PrEP on a health insurance prescription.
Where can I find more information about test centres or medical practices?
If you have a A doctor who should accompany your PrEP, we recommend the following two different lists:
- At dagnä e.V. you will find a List of HIV-focussed doctorsthat offer PrEP counselling.
- On the Online map from prep.jetzt activists have listed all doctors who recommend PrEP users from their own experience for PrEP counselling.
There are overlaps between the two lists. In addition, both lists are constantly updated.
If you are using the checks in a AIDS service organisationa Checkpoint or at the Health department If you want to have a check carried out at a test centre, find out in advance which checks are offered there - and how much they cost. You can find an overview on our test centre map.
You can find more information on where to have the checks carried out in your area at AIDS service organisations and checkpoints on site and with the Telephone and online counselling from AIDS service organisations.
PrEP on private prescription
Not all private health insurance companies currently cover the costs of PrEP. However, it may still be worth submitting the prescriptions to the health insurance company to have the costs covered.
There is also the option of PrEP on a private prescription:
In participating pharmacies In selected cities, it is also possible to obtain PrEP for around 40 euros per 28 tablets. This corresponds to the amount required for four weeks of continuous PrEP if taken daily.
To do this, your doctor must issue a private prescription on which the following must be prescribed:
- PrEP emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil
- 28 pieces for blistering
The details "PrEP", "28 units" and "for blister packaging" are absolutely essential. This is the only way to get the favourable price.
However, you can also get PrEP on a private prescription without blister packaging. You can then obtain the monthly pack from any pharmacy from around 70 euros.
Private billing of PrEP checks: If you are charged privately for the examinations, the costs can be very high. Therefore, talk to your doctor about whether and if so, what costs you will incur.
There are two PrEP variants. Some gay men want to take PrEP permanently over a long period of time. Others only want to take it for a short time, for a sex party or a holiday. In both cases, correct intake is necessary for PrEP to work. Regular check-ups are also part of PrEP.
Since 1 September 2019, statutory health insurance companies have covered the costs of PrEP tablets and associated tests. Trained doctors can prescribe PrEP for you.
