Treatment & Therapy

Today, it is recommended to start HIV treatment as early as possible. The medication keeps HIV so well in check that the virus can no longer be passed on during sex, whether with or without a condom. Those who start treatment in good time have an almost normal life expectancy with a good quality of life.

HIV therapy today

Today, there are drugs that prevent HIV from multiplying in the body and thus also AIDS. If treatment is started in good time and continued for the rest of your life, you can lead a good and long life.

How the therapy works

HIV therapy ensures that the formation of new viruses is suppressed and HIV can no longer be detected using conventional methods. This is made possible by using several active substances at the same time. Each active substance blocks the replication of the virus at different sites. This treatment is known as combination therapy or antiretroviral therapy (ART for short).

Although the drugs are good at keeping HIV in check, they cannot remove it from the body. One HIV infection cannot be cured according to the current state of science.

Choice of doctor
If you have received an HIV-positive test result, you should get a medical examination and counselling as soon as possible. The best way to do this is with HIV specialists - so-called speciality doctors. This will help you find a suitable doctor.
